Before reading the job description below, please ensure that you meet the following minimum criteria:
- Educated to degree level PLUS recognised Diploma Level qualification in EFL teaching (eg: DELTA)
- Ideally, previous experience of working in a UK based International Summer School in a similar or related role (Such as Senior teacher or Director of Studies)
- Previous experience of British Council inspections – familiarity with criteria and standards to be adhered to would be advantageous.
- Experience, ability and confidence to lead from the front and by example – you will be required to motivate, inspire and guide centre-based Directors of Studies as necessary.
- Willingness to travel between your cluster centres as required
- Ability to use own initiative and work as part of a team.
- Available to attend induction in Edinburgh/ Hastings (expenses paid) prior to commencement of contract
Available to work for entire contracted time (EAC cannot accommodate holiday requests during the period of time that summer school is operating)
Job Description
Title: Area Academic Manager
Hours of Work: As required. (Usually 39 hours per week). At least one day off per week
Responsible to: Claire Rickards, EAC Senior Academic Manager
Summary of Main Duties:
As an Area Academic Manager your role is a support and supervisory one. You are expected to ensure the successful delivery of the academic programme in each of your cluster centres and your main duties will include, but are not limited to:
- Timetabling visits to 'cluster' centres with Directors of Studies
Teacher Development and Support
- Teacher Observation
- Facilitating peer observation by relieving teachers of class duties
- INSET (In-Service Training)
- Assisting teachers with lesson planning
Director of Studies Support
- Academic administration support
- Ensuring student records are kept up to date
- Assisting DoS with any grievances /complaints/disciplinary problems
- Timetabling support
- Weekly telephone contact with DoSs
- De-briefing teachers/DoSs at close of contract (where possible)
Other Duties
- Emergency cover for DoSs
- Reporting to line manager on a week-by-week basis re. centre visits
- Keeping written records on visits and sending weekly written report to line manager
Please note that the AAM is not expected to teach classes, even if there is a shortage of teachers in a centre.
Meetings
- Attending teachers' meetings at centres where possible
- Available for interview at BC inspection
