EAC - Adult Learning

Don't just learn English, Experience English.

Director of Studies

Responsible to: Centre Manager and EAC’s Senior Academic Manager
Hours: As required – Minimum 42 hours per week

Duties and Responsibilities
You will be directly responsible both to the Centre Manager for the smooth educational management of your centre, and to EAC’s Senior Academic Manager for the quality of educational delivery.  This list is by no means exhaustive, but intended to provide you with a summary of your main duties, which will include:

  • Testing and placement of students
  • Timetabling
  • Teacher induction and day to day teacher support
  • Leading regular teachers’ meetings
  • Management of materials and other teaching resources
  • Administering Trinity exams
  • Lesson observations and teacher reports
  • Ensuring accurate records are maintained (registers, records of work done etc)
  • Ensuring all reports and certificates are issued and completed
  • Troubleshooting and resolving any issues that arise over any aspect of the educational programme
  • Ensuring that the educational programme coordinates logically and smoothly with other aspects of the course such as excursions, local visits etc.
  • Liasing with head office on staffing requirements
  • Teaching as standby whenever required
  • Assisting other senior managers in other general aspects of the centre management whether directly related to the tuition programme or not
  • Assisting the Centre Manager as required and assuming the role of Centre Manager in his/her absence
  • Responsible for Teaching Syllabus:

An outline syllabus will be suggested by EAC but your autonomy, as Director of Studies, will allow this to be supplemented and developed as required.

Residential Staff and Accommodation
As one of the Senior Members of staff you share the overall responsibility for the pastoral care of our students on site.  Consequently, EAC will provide your accommodation and full board free of charge.

In order to ensure continued overall supervision, whilst ensuring appropriate rest for Senior Staff, the Centre Manager will be expected to timetable your own pastoral duties and those of the Activity Manager (and, where applicable the Camp Director and/or Assistant Camp Director) to ensure that one senior member of staff is officially on duty each night in addition to 2 non-senior staff members (ie: Teachers and Activity Leaders).

Pastoral Duties
Will vary from centre to centre, but will generally include, for example:

  • Helping group leaders to settle students
  • Dealing with any problems or emergency situations
  • Dealing with any accommodation problems
  • Helping to ensure that students are in their accommodation and not elsewhere on the campus unauthorised.

Lunchtime duties may also be required in some centres and Activity Leaders will normally cover these – with the assistance from teachers if necessary.

NB: Directors of Studies must note that both they and their teaching staff are not exempt from pastoral duties if residential.
